That last stretch is where the trip earns its price tag, cliffside terraces in Positano, dinners in Ravello with the whole coastline laid out below you. Best time to visit: May–June or September–October.

Best time to visit: May–June or September–October, both for the pricing and because you'll actually be able to see the view without someone else's shoulder in it.
MALDIVES
Seven nights, one resort.

One resort, one incredible stretch of water, and nowhere else you need to be. That's the whole appeal, and it's also why the price holds firm even at the nice tier, everything here is remote and imported, down to the produce. Overwater villas at properties like Four Seasons or St. Regis run $1,700–$4,000 a night. Best time to visit: May–October for dry season; November–April brings real savings with some cyclone risk in December–January.
SOUTH AFRICA: SAFARI, CAPE TOWN, AND THE WINELANDS
Nine to ten nights, three stops.

This is the version of an African honeymoon we recommend most, and it's built around a climax, not a marathon. Three to four nights of safari, then Cape Town and a few days in the Winelands to unwind. Those safari nights carry the highest per-night rate on the trip by far, premium Sabi Sands lodges run $1,000–$2,000 per person, per night, and that rate is fully inclusive: lodging, food, beverage, and two private guided game drives a day. That's a different kind of purchase than a hotel room rate anywhere else on this list, you're not paying for a nicer room, you're paying for an entire world outside it. Kenya and Tanzania are the route if safari is the whole trip rather than the climax of one, and that structure runs higher, more nights at that same all-inclusive rate. Best time to visit: June–October for peak wildlife viewing; April–May and November for real savings and thinner crowds.

JAPAN: TOKYO, HAKONE, AND KYOTO

Private guiding runs high here too, a full day with a specialized guide in Kyoto or Tokyo can run several hundred dollars, which is part of why even the nice tier in Japan costs more than it might elsewhere. WHAT ACTUALLY DRIVES THE COST
Flights: Often the single biggest swing in the whole budget, sometimes bigger than the gap between tiers.
Accommodation: One upgrade, standard room to suite, or shared to private villa, is usually the largest jump within a destination.
