Sedona, AZ

As Arizona getaways go, Sedona’s not hard to love. Far from the heat and sprawl and traffic of Phoenix, it’s a hundred miles north, and three thousand feet higher up, in an entirely different landscape — one of stunning red rocks and dramatic mountain sunlight. There are countless adventures and unique things to do in Sedona. Any number of adventures can be arranged: vortex hikes, Pink Jeep tours, trips to the Grand Canyon, hot air balloon rides, and more. It’s one of the best places in America to watch the sunset - you can experience the magical, awe-inspiring sight of the Sedona rocks blazing gold in the evening.

Eat

After a day of hiking Sedoa’s red rock trails you’ve earned a hearty dose of delicious Mexican food - our favorite in Sedona is Elote Cafe. The head chef spent 15 years travelling through Mexico so he knows his stuff. You’ll find upscale versions of all your favorite Mexican classics like the restaurant's namesake appetizer which is out of this world: fire-roasted corn with spicy mayo, lime, and Mexican Cotija cheese. For an entree don’t miss the grilled wild Mexican shrimp in a spinach-chipotle cream sauce. And for dessert, pastel de elote — a warm, sweet corn cake with dulce de leche, raspberry jam, and vanilla ice cream.

Play

If you’re going to rent a car, make sure it’s a 4WD for a spectacular drive through Schnebly Hill Road. The original road from Sedona to Flagstaff, it’s a very rough gravel road, but the scenery is spectacular. 4WD is recommended and not suitable for low-riding vehicles. About 20 minutes up, there is a steel gate; park to the left just before it and walk uphill to the overlook. After that, you can continue driving up Schnebly Hill to the top of the Mogollon Rim (about another 20 minutes).

Sleep

Amara Resort & Spa [Boutique]

Contemporary-design boutique hotels took their time arriving in the Southwest, but with the advent of Amara Resort and Spa, it’s safe to say they’ve officially arrived. The onsite restaurant, SaltRock Southwest Kitchen, serves Southwestern cuisine with a California influence, along with craft margaritas, tequila, and mezcal drinks — very necessary after a day spent hiking or biking through Red Rock country.
